Game Story

SAITAMA, Japan (Ticker) -- It took Cameroon 65 minutes to break a rather stubborn Saudi Arabia defense before going on to a 1-0 victory in a Group E match. Samuel Etoo ran behind the defense on a long pass from his own half and swiftly placed the ball low past Mohammed Al Deayea for his 12th international goal. The goal came after Cameroon wasted a handful of chances in the second half. "It was important that we won. But we have one problem - we can't score in front of goal," Cameroon coach Winnnie Schaefer said. "If we could have scored in the first few minutes then it would have been a different story. I compliment the new team of Saudi Arabia. I would have loved for them to fight the same way against Germany." By way of the result, Saudi Arabia became the first of 32 teams to be out of the tournament regardless of the last game against Ireland, but may look to play the role of spoiler. "We promise that we will do our best in the final match so that we can show the real quality of Saudi football and say goodbye to the World Cup on a good note," said Saudi coach Nasser Al Johar. Cameroon is in good position to continue its road but it will face a tough contest vs. Germany on June 11. "We have to win against Germany. I don't have any special feeling about Germany, I just want to beat another team," added Schaefer who is German. "It will be a decisive match. I didn't really want that (to play Germany in decisive match) but I am a Lion, as trainer of the Cameroon team. I really want my team to get through to the second round, even at the expense of Germany." The reigning African Nations champions created few opportunities in the opening half, although it had two goals disalowed for being offside. Patrick Mboma had his effort called off as was a header by Lauren. Saudi Arabia showed much more spunk in its play than it did five days ago when it was routed by Germany, 8-0. Saudi coach Nasser Al-Johar went with five defensemen and left striker Sami al-Jaber out of the lineup. "The team has recovered in this match to reflect a real picture of Saudi football. In the first match we were all shocked by the Saudi performance," added Al Johar. In fact, in the first half it even had the better of scoring chances when Obeid Al Dossari steered a header over the net after eight minutes while former Asian Player of the Year Nawaf Al Temyat hit the side netting in the 42nd. Saudi Arabia based its game plan on a more organized defense and counterattacks with Al Dosari as the lone forward. Al Temyat was a constant menace in the second part but without clarity on his finishes. He had at least three good chances of his eight shots attempted, but without result. Saudi Arabia matched the three shots on goal it had against Germany by the 25th minute, and finished the match with 14 attempts. Cameroon came out more determined in the second half, looking for multiple goals. Raymond Kalla had a solid header turned away by Al Deayea, Lauren hit a shot and Etoo also drilled one high. The Saudi netminder was also tested by Rigobert Song and substitute Salomon Olembe. "It will be difficult against Germany. They are one of the biggest teams in this World Cup," Lauren said. "But in the game, anything can happen."
